The support of family, friends and neighbours is critical for success. My support network helped me keep on track, encouraging me when I needed it most and taking care of regular daily activities that I would normally have completed myself. (Steve)
This past couple of weeks have flown by in a flurry of activity for us as I am sure it has for many of you. The beginning of school is always crazy without adding in our new realities of a mom back in school and a dad still not back to full functioning! We are so thankful for Jean, who picked Steve up last Wednesday morning and took him to his latest doctor appointment,and for Laura, who graciously transported Rebekkah off to her new school when there was no one here to get her to the bus.
Once again the doctor appointment brought us good news and bad news. The good news is that Steve can begin walking again - a welcome relief to the problem of trying to get Rebekkah to the bus stop and back. And, now we are a half week to driving and 'normal' life again. Until then, there is still no lifting, bending or intense physical activity. "Dishes" is back on the list! :)
The bad (and hard) news was hearing that the bad eye has developed a cataract that will require more surgery. We knew this was a possible and even likely outcome as a side effect to the drops following the reattachment. However, as a couple who were still looking forward to simply returning to a 'normal' rhythm, this was disappointing news.
It has been hard for Steve to see the sight that was returning is now getting worse, and it has been discouraging to find the 'space of blindness' he now has in that eye's peripheral vision. In the grand scheme of life, cataracts are really no big deal, nor is an eye with a small area of blindness; heaped one on the other, it just feels a little hard.
We continue to trust and cling to the fact that God has it all put together, even when we don't. He knows the beginning from the end, and none of this has caught him by surprise. Our new Sunday School curriculum has us memorizing this verse with Rebekkah, "The LORD is the Everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom." Isaiah 40:28
For now, we'll just try our best to rest in that thought.
