Loss of vision, flashes in the eye, shadows, a very large floater, lots of little floaters (almost like fruit flies)
Please contact your eye specialist immediately. If your optometrist is not available, we highly recommend that you visit the Emergency Department at any one of these Hospitals.
If you haven't yet had cataract surgery, this is something you will inevitable have develop fairly quickly. In my case, I was unable to see the Big Letter E on the wall in the Ophthalmologist's office three months post-surgery. In this section, we provide resources and help to allow you to be prepared for better vision. There is no requirement to be facedown for your recovery.
Breathe Easy! There are NO positioning requirements post cataract surgery. With that said, I highly recommend extending your "take it easy" time beyond what is recommended. For instance, I was told two days no driving and no heavy lifting for a week. When I mentioned to my Ophthalmologist that I would be digging a hole for an egress window she extended my "heavy activity" restriction to 2 weeks. At that point I began lifting our 50-60 pound facedown recovery beds and scared myself when I felt a lot of pressure in my surgery eye. As a result, I extended my no lifting to 3 weeks.
From my experience, you will be referred to an Ophthalmologist at about the 3 to 4 month mark post-vitrectomy. Once you see the Cataract Specialist you are likely another 3 to 4 months out before having cataract surgery.
Thankfully you will not have to have cataract surgery again. With that said, there is a possibility that the cataract lens may need to be cleared up by a YAG laser at a later date.
I definitely began to notice the difference in my surgery eye between the 2 and 3 month mark. At a follow-up I was unable to see the BIG Letter E in front of me. At the time I didn't know what it was but thankful to learn it was a cataract, even at the age of 46.
If you have not yet had cataracts, you will inevitable have them develop quickly in your surgery eye. In my case, I found that by month 3 during a follow-up check that I was unable to see the BIG Letter E on the wall. Although discouraging at the time I realize now that this was part of the process.
