During my recovery, I realized that just minutes after leaving the surgeon’s office, Tracy and I would often find ourselves overwhelmed with questions we hadn’t thought to ask. To help you avoid that “I wish I had asked _______” moment, we’ve curated a list of essential questions based on our experience. Keep in mind that your surgeon is busy, and there will likely be many other patients waiting, so it's best to go prepared. Asking your questions one by one will give you the confidence to know you're doing everything you need for a successful recovery. While your surgeon may not answer questions about long-term recovery, they can guide you through the immediate steps after surgery.

Pre-Surgery Questions

  1. Do I need to be facedown or head down at all times?
  2. How long will the gas bubble remain in my eye?
  3. What should I do if I experience severe pain or discomfort after surgery?
  4. Who should I contact if I have questions or concerns? Does this change over the weekend?
  5. What is the process for applying for short-term disability?
  6. How soon will the physician’s forms for short-term disability be completed?
  7. Can I take any sedatives or medications prior to surgery, and are there any restrictions on that?

Eye Care and Shield

  1. When can I stop using the eye shield?
  2. Do I need to take eye drops at night?
  3. Can I clean the eye shield or other equipment myself?
  4. Will the eye shield be uncomfortable to wear, and can I expect irritation?

Activities During Facedown Recovery

  1. Can I watch TV or use a tablet while I am facedown?
  2. Am I allowed to read or use my smartphone?
  3. Are there any specific positions or adjustments I should make while using digital devices?
  4. How often should I take my eye drops, and do I need to set reminders?

Activities After Facedown Recovery

  1. When can I go to the dentist since I will be lifting my head up?
  2. When may I begin showering or washing my hair?
  3. When can I start lifting objects heavier than 10 pounds (such as my children or grocery bags)?
  4. Is it okay to dye my hair after surgery, and if so, when?
  5. When can I begin wearing my contact lenses again?
  6. How long after surgery should I wait before swimming or submerging my head in water?

Surgery and Medications

  1. Can I have a sedative prescribed before surgery to help with anxiety, and when should I take it?
  2. Are there any restrictions on eating or drinking prior to surgery, and if so, how long before?

Post-Surgery Travel and Movement

  1. When may I travel on public transportation (bus, train, etc.)?
  2. How soon can I walk around the block or go to the grocery store?
  3. Are there any restrictions on physical activity or travel for the first few weeks?

General Recovery

  1. What signs or symptoms should I watch out for that may indicate a problem?
  2. How long will it take before I can return to normal activities, including work and exercise?
  3. How can I prevent complications during recovery?
  4. What can I do to make my recovery more comfortable and promote healing?

Vitrectomy Recovery - You Can Do This!!

My Story of a Retinal Detachment

We’ve been there. 2014!! We know how uncertain, scary and overwhelming vitrectomy surgery can be. We were right in the middle of a bathroom renovation when Steve thought the black spot in his eye was from a splashback that jumped his safety goggles and lodged in his eye while rinsing a bucket. After a trip to the ER where the doctor could not find anything, he was referred to an ophthalmologist. Fifteen hours later he was in surgery to repair a detached retina.
