Lying facedown and being still after a vitrectomy is recommended to our renters to help prevent complications and promote healing. A vitrectomy is a surgical procedure performed on the eye to remove the vitreous humor, the gel-like substance that fills the center of the eye. This procedure is commonly done to treat various eye conditions, such as retinal detachment, macular hole, diabetic retinopathy, and vitreous hemorrhage.

Here are some reasons why being still is advised after a vitrectomy, especially if you have a gas bubble:

1. Facilitating Gas Tamponade:

In some vitrectomy surgeries, a gas bubble is injected into the eye to help hold the retina in place, especially in cases of retinal detachment. Remaining still and maintaining a specific head or body position (such as facedown) can help ensure that the gas bubble stays in contact with the affected area of the retina. This allows the bubble to provide the necessary support and tamponade effect to help the retina heal.

2. Minimizing Stress on the Eye:

Moving or straining can increase the intraocular pressure, potentially causing complications or displacing the gas bubble. To prevent this, patients are often advised to avoid any activities that might increase eye pressure, such as heavy lifting, bending over, or strenuous exercise.

3. Promoting Proper Healing:

After a vitrectomy, it's crucial for the eye to heal properly. Resting and avoiding excessive movement can aid in the recovery process and reduce the risk of post-operative complications, such as infection or bleeding.

4. Enhancing Surgical Outcomes:

Compliance with post-operative instructions, including maintaining a still position if required, can improve the success rate of the surgery and ultimately contribute to better visual outcomes.

It's essential to follow your surgeon's specific instructions, as the post-operative guidelines can vary depending on the type of surgery, the individual patient's condition, and the specific gas or tamponade used. Failing to follow these instructions could increase the risk of complications and hinder the healing process. Always consult your eye surgeon for guidance tailored to your situation and to address any concerns you may have.
